Basic Data
Located at the heart of the Ile de la Cité in Paris, Sainte-Chapelle is an excellent example of High Gothic architecture. King Lois IX commissioned the palace chapel to house relics acquired from Constantinople including the Crown of Thorns and part of the True Cross.. (Wodehouse 181)
The chapel has two levels: a ground floor chapel for the commoners, and an upper chapel which is bathed in light from the near removal of walls. Sainte-Chapelle is the the goal which every single Gothic cathedral strove for: near dematerialization of walls to be replaced by stained glass.
