Basic Data
Built in 1895, the Reliance Building is arguably the first skyscraper - built to a then-unheard of 14 stories. The building was constructed out of steel with terra cotta fireproofing - one of the first buildings which used steel exclusively as a structural bearing and spanning system.
Note: exterior of building used to be comprised of large, retractable, awnings. The advent of centralized air conditioning gave cause to remove the awnings, which were never replaced.
