Basic Data
Directly influenced by the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago in 1893, Penn Station was a feat of engineering, using modern steel structure with a classical cladding. Penn Station was the pinnacle of American Beaux Arts style, with clear ordering of spaces and use of careful proportions in both plan and section, and the composition of all elements around both the major- and minor-axis.
Penn Station was torn down in 1964 to make way for Madison Square Garden, and was the impetus for the first (in America) Landmarks Preservation Commission, which oversees both individual landmarks, and also landmark districts.
